RoofersCoffeeShop® is proud to present the honor of R-Club Roofer of the Month to Durable Slate Company!
Since their inception in 1986, Durable Slate Company has been specializing in working with traditional roofing materials such as slate, clay and natural copper. Their crew is trained in the traditional trades and methods of roofing, and they do a lot of work on historical buildings. Gary Howes, their chief operating officer, spoke with us recently about the work they do with older buildings.
“It's really cool to work on something that's very old, especially if there is historical significance to it,” he says. “When you do the kind of work we do within the roofing industry, it's got a level of reward that is different than just putting on your more modern materials.”
Durable Slate Company takes pride in the craftsmanship of their work and attributes a lot of their success to their training methods. Most of their crew training is done in-house and they have a comprehensive apprenticeship program. They even have seven Gold Circle Awards from Roofing Alliance, the foundation of the National Roofers Contractors Association (NRCA).
Gary also attributes a lot of their success to the women who work in their company. Several of them are members of National Women in Roofing (NWIR) and they recently hosted a diaper drive as well.
“The women in our business are becoming much more influential than ever before,” Gary says. “They're holding positions of power and influence like never before. And so I think it's exciting. My wife works in our company and two of my daughters. So yeah, I'm all for that.”
