New Orleans—In recognition for its years of work helping mentally, emotionally and physically challenged individuals, Double D Roofing & Sheet Metal of York, Pa., has been presented with the sixth annual CNA/NRCA Community Involvement Award sponsored by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) and CNA.
For more than 19 years, Double D Roofing & Sheet Metal has worked with Shadowfax, an organization that provides services to developmentally disabled adults and helps them gain skills to find meaningful work. Double D Roofing & Sheet Metal ships Firestone Building Products' screws and metal insulation plates to Shadowfax, and workers pre-assemble the screws and plates to be installed on roof systems.
Some Shadowfax workers enjoy the task so much they feel as though they are employees of Double D Roofing & Sheet Metal and Firestone Building Products, and they wait eagerly for trucks to arrive so they can begin their work for the day.
CNA awarded Double D Roofing & Sheet Metal with $7,500 to be presented to Shadowfax.
Additionally, second-place winner Action Roofing Hawaii LLC, Kapolei, Hawaii, received $5,000 for donating materials and labor to install new standing-seam metal roof systems for Kahauki Villages, a project that helps homeless families settle into long-term, affordable housing.
Third-place winner, O'LYN Roofing, Norwood, Mass., received $2,500 for its work with The Home for Little Wanderers, whose mission is to ensure the healthy, behavioral, emotional, social and educational development and physical well-being of at-risk children and families.
In addition, for the first year CNA and NRCA added a People's Choice Award, which was selected by public online voting on NRCA's website. The winner of the People's Choice Award, Tecta America, Cumming, Ga., received $1,500 for its work with Special Needs and Treats Inc., a nonprofit company that focuses on providing special needs adults with training in catering and provides catered food to local food ministries, elderly care facilities, and women and children's shelters.
The awards were presented Feb. 7 during NRCA's Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception held during NRCA's 131st Annual Convention in New Orleans.
