Designed to outlast the storm

MetalTalk Designed to outlast the storm
July 29, 2024 at 3:00 a.m.

By Emma Peterson.

Learn how Westlake Roofing products are designed to face extreme weather events such as hail and wind storms.

Because severe weather events are becoming more common each year, it is key to make sure your roof is set up to succeed in the face of any storm. In this MetalTalk™, Karen Edwards spoke to Cody Raymond and Lindsey Riddle of Westlake Royal Roofing Products to hear how they have responded to the need for more durability in the face of extreme weather events. Cody has been working with Westlake for over nine years now and Lindsey has been working with them for just over a year. Both of them are managers in areas with unique weather events, Cody covers Texas, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and Utah and Lindsey focuses on the Florida region.

Cody and Lindsey have noticed a distinct rise in extreme and dangerous weather events. If you look at numbers that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has recorded as of January 1, 2024 to June 13, 2024 there have been over 7,000 reports of severe wind with around 5,400 reporting related damages. Cody added, “There have also been many hail events in the first six months of the year; we're already over 3,700. And over 600 of those exceed two inches in size which, with all the coverage that we have on weather events, our weather reporting seems to be really good at showing some of the devastating effects this can have on people in their homes.”

In response to these rising dangers and challenges, Westlake has been creating products that take that kind of weather into account. Lindsey explained, “With Westlake, you actually get a wind warranty with our product. We have 120 mile per hour wind warranty as a standard.” Cody added that when it comes to things like hail events, Westlake’s products are tested against standards like Class Four impact and the UL 2218 until they pass. He explained what these tests often entail, sharing, “The UL 2218 testing is basically a two-inch hail ball that's dropped from 20 feet and then it shows what different roofing products can do as far as holding up to that. Our product passes that with flying colors.”
