DECRA® Roof in Canada is an Ageless Beauty

Nearly 40 years after the original installation, this DECRA roof in Canada has withstood the test of time.

The true test for roofing materials is that of time. In Ottawa, Canada, time has proven no match for the performance and longevity of a DECRA Roofing System.

Charles Lortie, building owner and roofing contractor, put the DECRA product to the test on an apartment building that has been converted over the last three decades into condominiums. In 1978, Lortie replaced a composition roof on the apartment building he owned with DECRA Tile in Garnet.

Currently, this is the oldest known installation of DECRA product in North America. While the building has seen many internal changes, the roof has maintained the same look as it had on day one of installation. The DECRA panels have not faded or degraded, and continue to endure Canada’s harsh elements. The garnet-hued tiles covering the building’s turrets and mansard, contribute to the classic, architectural, aesthetics of the building.

Aside from aesthetics, the DECRA roof has been remarkably durable. DECRA Tile is installed on a batten system. The interlocking panels are fastened into the battens horizontally through the nose of the panel rather than vertically through the face like other materials. By fastening the panel horizontally into the nose of the panel, and subsequently into the batten, wind resistance is increased because the nail would have to be sheared apart in order for the panel to lift up.

Because DECRA products are made from steel, they are freeze-thaw resistant, carry a Class A fire rating for material, and a Class 4 impact resistance rating from Underwriters Laboratories – all adding to the durability of the product. A low maintenance product, the 3,000-square foot project remains as beautiful today as the day it was installed.

About DECRA With a proven commitment to quality and performance, DECRA Roofing Systems has over 50 years of experience manufacturing and marketing stone coated steel roofing systems. DECRA Roofing Systems are manufactured in Corona, California at a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility registered by UL to ISO 9001:2008, OHSAS 18001 and most recently ISO14001:2004.
