Creating Future Leaders and Inspiring Social Change

ATAS Creating Future Leaders and Social Change

By Colin Sheehan, RCS Reporter.

The Let’s Build Camp for Girls empowers young women to pursue careers in construction, architecture, engineering and manufacturing.

The Let’s Build Construction Camp for Girls is a collaborative partnership between Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), as well as ATAS International and Habitat for Humanity. This free program is designed for girls ages 14-18 who attend a week-long camp that introduces them to the construction trades, architecture, engineering and construction manufacturing through hands-on projects and engaging field trips.

“Let’s Build camp for girls is a camp where we learn every aspect of any construction field, we learn a lot about carpentry and all the trade related things. It’s really hands on and we get to network and meet a lot of new people,” said camper Mikayla Knowles in a video produced by ASR Media Productions.

In the video, campers and adult organizers talk about the empowering effects this camp has on the kids who attend. By providing young girls an opportunity to explore fulfilling career paths at a young age, they begin to see the possibilities of the future open for them.

“The great part about the Let’s Build Construction Camp for Girls is that we show all aspects of the construction industry...So, we really show them that you can either pick up a hammer, you can also be a mason, a plumber, you can design a building or you can take part in product manufacturing,” said Kristen Fallon of ABC.

Earlier this summer, the campers built a shed for the organization’s Toast for Hope event where patrons and guests bid on projects the campers have completed. The shed was an artistic masterpiece and the girls took photos with it before handing it over to the lucky bidder.

“This camp is important to me because I feel like I’m learning a lot [about being] more independent,” said camper Alizet Pena, “I would encourage other girls to participate in this camp because it’s an amazing way to empower yourself and prove that you are capable of anything.”
