Penrose resident Shelley Slater no longer will be singing, "Rain, rain go away," now that she has been gifted a brand new roof for her formerly leaky home. That's because Colorado Contractor C-R Roofing & Construction donates new roof.
Slater, 57, lives week to week on less than $800 per month on disability benefits, so when her roof began to have significant leaks, all she could do was place a plastic tote on her couch to collect the rainwater.
"My dirt and this old mobile home are all I have," she said. "It was a true blessing (to receive the new roof), and a true act of Christianity."
She has lived in her home 25 years, and because she is permanently disabled after a construction accident several years ago, she travels daily to Pueblo for traction therapy. She looked into a low-interest loan to replace the roof, but she still was unable to afford the payments. Crist Helmuth of C-R Roofing & Construction in Penrose was one of the roofing contractors to offer an estimate when she was looking to get a loan, and he later contacted her and offered to replace the roof at no charge. The roof would have cost her between $2,500 and $3,000.
"I like to donate time and labor to a worthy cause," Helmuth said, adding he really doesn't want much public recognition. "I felt this could be a project I could help out."

RCS Notes: We realize that you my not be inclined to share your stories if you have donated a new roof as most donations of time and materials are given from the heart and not for promotion. With that in mind we would like to point out that there is a lot of bad reported by the roofing industry with disreputable contractors. We need to show the country that there are some terrific contractors out there. Your stories are needed (and appreciated!)
