Committing to Company Culture With a Culture Pledge

FlashCo Committing to company culture
August 12, 2022 at 9:00 a.m.

By Cass Jacoby, RCS Reporter.

Learn about how SRS kept their culture front of mind even as they grew 9,000 employees by pledging to uphold the attributes that make this company so special.

RCS President Heidi J. Ellsworth travels to Texas in Season 4, Episode 26 of the Roofing Road Trips Podcast, to talk with SRS Distribution’s EVP/Chief Human Resource Officer Carrie David. Grab a cup of coffee and tune in to learn about the SRS culture pledge and how it has helped maintain SRS’s extraordinary culture that has changed expectations of employees throughout roofing, even as the company expands.

Based on the explosive growth that SRS has been experiencing, the culture pledge came out of a desire to make sure the company didn’t lose the attributes that made their culture so special from the beginning, especially as new employees were joining the family. Characteristics like integrity, courage and commitment have long been a part of why SRS has such a strong culture.

“We wanted to really formalize some of those attributes in a culture pledge,” says Carrie. “That includes our core values, because we want every employee to be proud of the company that he or she works for and be proud of this culture and come to work every day, just knowing that you'll be respected, you'll be included. And we're all responsible for maintaining that culture.”

Carrie tells Heidi that the culture pledge is displayed in their lobby. “The CEO and the 50 top leaders of the organization signed all around that culture pledge in the margins,” says Carrie. “Culture is so important to us that when we decided to launch this culture pledge last December, our CEO, Dan Tinker brought in the top 50 leaders from across the country...it was that important to us that we wanted all top leaders in the same room to have a face-to-face conversation about how we nurture the culture and raise the bar going forward because we've gotten to be a pretty substantial size.”

The culture pledge is all about celebrating and committing to who SRS is as a culture, solidifying what they believe in and how we're going to treat each other. “This is how we're going to ensure that everyone can bring their best self to work, be their whole self,” says Carrie. “It was a really important part of the equation for us and the go forward success."
