Coatings Challenge: A Structurally Sound Roof on a Beautiful Stucco Building

GAF Coatings Challenge
June 12, 2019 at 1:30 p.m.

By Don Kilcoyne, GAF.

With a low investment, and ease of installation, GAF coatings are a great way to grow your business, whether you’re a low slope or steep slope contractor.

Welcome to the GAF Coatings Challenge with Michelle Carlin, GAF senior product manager, coatings.

Today we're talking about a coatings challenge from Al in Portland, Oregon. Al writes, "My customer has a structurally sound roof on a beautiful stucco building. We get a lot of rain, and the roof gets hit with a lot of standing water. It's late autumn, and it's getting cold up here. I've got to move fast. Some advice?"

Challenge:

  • A structurally sound roof on a beautiful stucco building.
  • Subject to a lot of rain and the roof gets hit with a lot of standing water.
  • Winter is approaching and the roofer would like to move fast.
  • What coating would YOU choose?

Indicators:

  • It’s a structurally sound building, so a coating is definitely a viable option.
  • Potential for standing water indicates a silicone roof coating.
  • Cold weather suggests choosing a coating that can be applied at lower temperatures.
  • Stucco retains run-off and may wind up looking messy, so look for a product that resists chalking.

Recommendation:

United Coatings™ Unisil HS (High Solids) Roof Coating

  • Silicone can be applied at a minimum temperature ten degrees lower than acrylics.
  • This makes it more likely that the contractor can complete the job before the weather makes it infeasible.
