COASTALUME™: The ultimate coastal roofing material

Dupont Tedlar COASTALUME Coastal Roofing Material

By Anna Lockhart.

Durable and stylish, this roofing material makes waves by providing home and building owners in coastal regions with a sturdy, reliant roof!

Earlier this year, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Corynn Sheridan of DuPont™ Tedlar®  and Mark Carlisle of U.S. Steel in the Lunch & Learn webinar, “Protect Your Coastal Roofs With COASTALUME™,” to discuss their companies’ collaborative efforts in creating the ground-breaking product, COASTALUME™.

COASTALUME™ is a major achievement for the industry, as it is the first GALVALUME® building material designed specifically for use in harsh coastal climates, combining the incredible design strengths of U.S. Steel & DuPont™ Tedlar®’s engineering. In particular, this product pairs U.S. Steel’s metal material base and DuPont™ Tedlar®’s PVF film barrier coating in order to give the product the best defenses against saltwater corrosion, harsh sunlight and UV exposure.

This partnership, combining their two incredible products, made bringing metal roofing to the beach a reality for many home and building owners. “COASTALUME™ is North America's first licensed GALVALUME® product that's warranted and designed for coastal environments. The ideal applications are roofing or wall systems,” Mark shared. “The reason we developed this product is a lot of our customers in the past had to pass on metal roofs because steel didn't perform well, or we didn't provide a warranty on our steel for coastal environments. So, that's why we teamed up with DuPont™ Tedlar®, and we were able to create a solution that gets us there. We're basically taking our steel customers to the beach.”

As Tedlar® is a polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) film, products with this particular coating are given an extra layer of protection against natural elements that otherwise would have normally caused damage over a short period of time. Pairing their PVF film capabilities with quality steel materials from U.S. Steel was a no brainer. “We have 20 plus years of South Florida testing as well as those 50 years of real-world testing. And you can truly hold up freshly made Tedlar® film right next to an aged building, and the color change is indistinguishable,” Corynn shared. “This COASTALUME™ product also doesn't require freshwater rinses, which so many paint systems do by the coast. It rinses clean in the rain. You could wash graffiti off it. Mold and mildew don't grow on it. It just really is not reacting to anything and it's essentially self-cleaning, low maintenance, no change over time.”

In an environment like the coastal beaches of Florida or elsewhere in North America, having a product like COASTALUME™ can make a major difference when it comes to getting the most out of your investments as a home or building owner. From long-lasting color to the durability and resilience of steel, COASTALUME™ is providing property owners with peace of mind and enhancing their curb appeal all at once.
