Choosing excellence: Synthetic products to protect homes from extreme weather

Davinci Choosing Excellence

By Dani Sheehan.

Hear from industry experts in this RLW as they share insights about educating their customers on durable solutions for severe weather.

Today’s built environment is subjected to more extreme weather than before. This has brought opportunity to the roofing industry to provide products that not only survive storms but can thrive against extreme weather events. In a recent Read Listen Watch® webinar, sponsored by DaVinci Roofscapes, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with roofing experts across the country to talk about how synthetic slate and shake roofing products are the perfect option to weather storms. Joined by Todd Knight from Dynasty Roofing in Texas, Thomas Ice from Storm King in Colorado and Cody Bates from Florida Specialty Roofing in Florida, they shared the importance of advising customers to choose the right products.

One of the major topics discussed was around how these companies help their customers prepare for extreme weather in their product choices and how they market those choices to them. When it comes to high-end homes in the mountains of Colorado, Thomas said it’s as easy as them asking for it. He explained, “Many of them just come to us telling us what they want, and we get a lot of leads from DaVinci also, but most of these people's neighbors have DaVinci roofs on their home and they want to go with that look also to keep the rustic look of the place, the wood shake look, we do some slate, but it's mostly wood shake. A lot of word of mouth, and I want what they have.”

Texas is known for frequent and damaging hailstorms, making it easy for Todd and his company to upsell DaVinci products for their overall impact resistance, durability and beauty. He explained, “Here in Texas, probably 80 to 90% of our business is insurance driven because of the frequency of the storm. So that's when we have our first contact with most of our new customers, and usually the first question I'm asked is, how do I not have to do this again anytime soon? And so, we obviously begin to talk to them about impact resistant products.”

In Florida, Cody deals less with insurance companies, but also has some of the most stringent building codes across the industry. He really believes in providing the right education to his customers. He shared, “A big part of our company is education and product knowledge, educating people that they're making the best financial decision as well as standing the curb appeal and choosing the product that's going to withstand the storms. So, we provide all the different options available, and then we steer people with the transparency of the best option in our opinion as their contractor that they're choosing.”
