Changing the Perspective on Spray Foam

General Coatings Spray Foam

By Colin Sheehan, RCS Reporter.

These instructional videos reveal spray foam as a long-lasting and affordable option for contractors.

Spray foam roofing systems are an economical and low-maintenance option that many contractors should utilize. General Coatings Manufacturing Corp and their series of how-to videos aims to help contractors understand just how easy it is to apply and maintain a spray foam system.

The collection of short, step-by-step instructional videos feature applications of spray-foam to a variety of roof drains, penetrations, decks, systems, slopes and terminations. In their second collection of videos, General Coatings demonstrates seven different application methods for applying spray foam to a variety of roof penetrations. These videos, which last less than one minute each, include helpful animated visuals detailing important spray-foam steps to help you complete your spray foam job.

The spray foam roof penetrations videos include:

  • Pipe/vent penetration

  • Solar array

  • Roof vent

  • Smoke-vent/skylight

  • A/C platform

  • Isolated stack

  • Equipment support stand detail

The video “Spray Foam Roof Detail – Pipe/Vent Penetration,” begins by instructing the foam to be tapered against the pipe (or alternative penetrative source) before applying a layer of spray foam against the flat roof surface that surrounds the pipe. The last step is to spray the elastomeric coating over the entire surface area.

The remaining videos follow a similar progression: each starting with the cleaning of the penetrative object (pipe, fan or vent) which is followed by spraying a protective tapered edge where these penetrations meet the roof’s surface. After the penetration has been tapered, the foam is applied to the remaining space on the roof and is lastly covered by elastomeric coating.

Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) roofing systems offer great insulation, resistance to high winds, protection against hail and can be recoated to extend the lifecycle of a roof. Unfortunately, for many years the conventional roofing market has perceived foam as soft and easily damaged. General Coatings is looking to change the industry perspective on spray foam as an affordable product that provides excellent long-term durability with little maintenance.
