Challenging Dome-Shaped Roof Benefits from New Roof Coating

EVERROOF Martinsound Project
August 26, 2020 at 2:00 p.m.

By EVERROOF.

Acrylic roof coating avoids re-roofing and adds 15 years to existing roof

In 1975, Joe Martinson started Alhambra, Cal-based Martinsound and has never looked back. From engineering world-renowned professional audio products used by iconic artists and top film studios to renovating the building to accommodate public-rental sets and studio space, the business and facility have seen much success.

Challenge

Recently, Martinson realized the 40,000 square-foot built-up roof (BUR) needed replacing and sent out an RFP. After speaking with three roofing contractors, Martinson selected Los Angeles, Cal-based American High Tech Roof Coating Inc. (AHTRCI) https://ahtrci.com/. After examining the facility’s domed roof, Javier Chavez, AHTRCI’s president, counseled that this roof would be an excellent candidate for an acrylic roof coating because most of the granules were in place and did not need a tear off and re-roofing.

While confident in his over 20 years of experience, Chavez knew this project would be challenging because of the dome shape, multiple penetrations, including dormers, and many roof-mounted air conditioning units. Additionally, he had to overcome Martinson’s skepticism because of a previously poorly manufactured and subpar roof coating application.

To alleviate Martinson’s concerns, Chavez explained the new coating technology that has been developed since the roof was last coated, and provided an extensive portfolio of successful dome-shaped roof coating projects.

Solution

AHTRCI turned to California-based EVERROOF to leverage their manufacturing expertise and myriad acrylic roof coating products. Having worked with EVERROOF for the past five years, Chavez was confident the company’s professional-grade coatings would be durable, resistant to dirt buildup and protect against severe weather conditions.

Starting with the dormers, then moving to the roof’s curve and then working on the dome, Chavez and his team first power washed the entire roof area, applied a base coat, resealed any roof penetrations with Ever-Crylic® Roof Flash, applied two coats of EVERROOF acrylic roof coating and then concluded with two finishing coats. This project used approximately 1,600 gallons of base and top coating.

“I’ve previously worked with different manufacturers’ coatings, but EVERROOF’s professional grade [coatings] seal better, has body and the specifications are more precise,” commented Chavez.

Results

EVERROOF’s acrylic roof coating saved Martinson 50 percent over the costs of a tear off and re-roofing, and adds another 15 years to the roof. It also provided an extra layer of UV protection to reduce thermal absorption. This will help Martinsound’s interior stay cooler, reducing energy consumption and costs.

“Javier and his team saved the investment in my old roof and provided a manufacture’s 15- year warranty. This was the best roofing experience of my 45 years in business,” Joe Martinson, owner Martinsound.

This new roof coating also provides a tax benefit to Martinson who can deduct (up to $1 million) on income taxes as an expense the first year rather than being considered a capital expense subject to depreciation over multiple years. In addition to the Federal government, many states and local utilities offer rebates or incentives for cool roofs. More information may be found at https://coolroofs.org/resources/rebates-and-codes.

This new cool roof acrylic coating is in compliance with California’s updated Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards that went into effect January 1, 2020. The cool roof dramatically reduces roof temperatures by reflecting UV rays, which also prevents the building’s interior from heating up, thereby lessening air conditioning usage. Martinsound will benefit from saving up to 30 percent on monthly electric costs.

“Other manufacturers’ coating products are watered down, don’t cover the granules even after two coats, and peel off,” added Chavez when asked why he favors EVERROOF coatings.

Chavez and his team’s extensive experience in working on dome-shaped roofs ensured Martinsound had a successful roof coating application that will last the next 15 years.
