Celebrating outstanding asphalt roofing projects

ARMA Celebrating outstanding asphalt roofing projects
October 2, 2024 at 9:00 p.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Discover how the Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards shine a spotlight on creativity and craftsmanship in the industry.

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, host Megan Ellsworth sat down for an engaging discussion with Reed Hitchcock, executive vice president of Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) and Lynn Picone, GAF’s director of inside sales and a longtime ARMA participant. They explore the Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards, which highlight the creativity and craftsmanship in asphalt roofing, often overlooked despite its prevalence in both residential and commercial applications.

The awards, which began in 2011, recognize exceptional asphaltic roofing projects in steep and low-slope applications. “We wanted to highlight using these tried-and-true materials in really challenging jobs or in really beautiful jobs,” Reed explained, expressing the durability and quality of asphalt systems. Lynn added that the awards provide an opportunity for contractors to showcase their work and educate property owners on the benefits of asphalt roofing.

Lynn focused on the significance of the Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards, stating, “It really provides an outlet for contractors to share the great work that they do and for that work to be recognized and celebrated within the industry.” Reflecting on memorable projects, Lynn recalls the Mosaic Building in Dallas, awarded in 2011, which still stands out in the skyline with its unique checkerboard pattern and logo. “I drove by it just a little while ago...and it still looks great,” she said, illustrating the long-lasting appeal and quality of asphaltic installations.

Reed also shared memorable projects that have been recognized by the awards. One standout project, mentioned by Reed, was a church with challenging access and complex rooflines. “I was so thrilled that our judges latched onto that and really recognized that it wasn't just about the material or even the beauty of the building, it was about the challenge of getting the material there, getting it onto the roof and installing it in addition to those other factors.”
