Celebrating a sustainability achievement

Malarkey Celebrating a sustainability achievement
June 6, 2024 at 12:00 p.m.

By Jonny Suchor.

Malarkey's approach of creating shingles using cleaner manufacturing techniques and lower-carbon materials embodies sustainability without compromising quality.

Malarkey Roofing Products' 2024 Sustainability Report sets an industry benchmark, reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship through innovative roofing solutions. Supported by credible third-party organizations like GreenCircle Certified, Cool Roof Rating Council, Cal Recycle and the United States Green Building Council, this year's report highlights Malarkey's significant environmental achievements.

According to the American Lung Association, four in 10 Americans live in counties with unhealthy air pollution. In an effort to provide cleaner air to Americans, Malarkey integrates their innovative smog-reducing granules on all of their shingles. These granules, activated by sunlight, transform smog gases into salt ions, making the roofs part of the solution to urban air pollution. Approximately two trees are “planted” per roof when these shingles with their smog-reducing granules are installed, and according to the 2024 report, roughly 1.5 million trees were “planted” thanks to Malarkey’s innovative granules.

Malarky’s sustainable practices extend to recycling too. Around 6.8 million upcycled rubber tires and approximately 4.5 billion plastic bags are diverted from landfills and reincorporated into the shingles, reducing waste and helping with the shingles' durability.

The NEX® Polymer Modified (Rubberized) Asphalt technology is another cornerstone of Malarkey's green initiatives. Compared to traditional oxidized asphalt, NEX® produces fewer emissions during production, helping Malarkey take significant strides towards cleaner manufacturing processes. This technology, along with the use of upcycled materials, proves Malarkey's approach to reducing the carbon footprint of its products while maintaining their superior quality and performance. According to the report, across all Malarkey plants they achieved over 90% waste diversion.

Through persistent innovation and concern for the environment, Malarkey continues to lead the way in sustainable roofing solutions.

Read the full 2024 Sustainability Report to learn more about Malarkey’s sustainability efforts and how they’re making a difference one shingle at a time.
