Back to the basics: An inside look at the fundamentals of using cover boards and insulation

Johns Manville Back to Basics

The latest Lunch & Learn dives deep into discussing the importance and applications of cover boards and insulation in commercial building projects.

In a recent Lunch & Learn webinar, host Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Jeff Job of Johns Manville to discuss the basics of insulation and cover board installation. In this conversation, they covered the ins and outs of all things pertaining to the topic, including why using these materials can deliver the best results for customers.

When it comes to commercial roofing, it is important to understand the different kinds and applications of materials like cover board and insulation, and how to best determine when to use each. In this conversation, Jeff and Heidi led participants in an interactive conversation and covered three main learning objectives: insulation 101, cover boards 101 and ISO cover boards.

One standout topic of the conversation that Jeff was excited to discuss was ISO cover boards and their benefits. At its core, a cover board is an added layer of resilience for the building system that helps protect the overall structure. Jeff shared, “It's a protective layer that's protecting your insulation below and it's protecting your membrane above... So, the addition of a cover board could go a long way in helping protect both of those high-cost components of a system.”

High-density polyiso (ISO) coverboards, in particular, carry many benefits for commercial building projects. Jeff shared, “Using the cover board is going to give you significant protection of your insulation package, and a very good robust kind of substrate to adhere your membrane to. In the grand scheme of things, it's probably a 10% cost component when you factor in labor and everything else. Mixing in a cover board is really going to allow you to protect those major components. It's going to help especially with your guarantees, too and really add to the longevity of the roofing system.”
