ASTM Matters for all Roofing Products

The quality of the product you provide to your customers, reflect upon the quality of your business. Meeting and exceeding ASTM standards reflects quality.

By Heidi J. Ellsworth.

How often do you look at the technical data sheets and understand all the testing standards?  Probably not very often.  It really can all be “Greek” to the everyday person.  Having worked in the industry for a long time, I have worked for great companies such as Malarkey Roofing Products and Carlisle Syntec Systems.  These companies were and continue to be focused on high-quality products that don’t just meet ASTM standards but exceed them.

ASTM International is one of the largest voluntary standards developing organizations in the world. They are a not-for-profit organization that provides a forum for the development and publication of international voluntary consensus standards for materials, products, systems and services.

Not often do you see smaller companies take the time and energy to focus on the quality of their product.  One of our partners, Wil-Mar Products, has that focus.  Founded in 1990 by W. R. “Bill” Merrin a roofing contractor, he realized the need in the industry to seal the vent pipe to a roof flashing and eliminate mastic and taping. The Pipe Collar was invented and patented, and provides a permanent weathertight vent pipe counter flashing that is warranted to last the life of the roofing system.

Bill realized that only the best materials would work for long-term performance.  He specified that manufacturing of the product only use rubber that meets or exceeds ASTM D-2000 standards.  What does that standard mean?  It is the standard for EPDM rubber that sets the standards for hi-lo temperatures, oil, ozone and sunlight resistance.  Due to the quality of the EPDM rubber used, Wil-Mar is able to offer a warranty that lasts as long as the roofing system.

As you look at the products you are using on the roof, be sure to take the time to read the technical information and understand how the ASTM standards are helping provide you the best quality products.
