Army Veteran Gifted Brand-new Roof for Free

RCS Army Vet Gifted Brand New Roof
February 4, 2023 at 6:00 p.m.

By Cayden Wemple.

Habitat for Humanity collaborated with a local roofing company to give an army veteran a much-needed new roof.

A crew of construction workers arrived early in the morning to fix the roof of army veteran, Derrick Childress. Derrick served in the United States army domestically and overseas for 24 years, and because he spent his life protecting and serving others, Habitat for Humanity along with Owens Corning and Total Roofing and Construction decided to give back and gift him with a brand-new roof.

The roof was in desperate need of repairs. Brett Edwards of Total Roofing and Construction told Fox 32 News, “The state of his roof was a state you don't want to see a lot of people's roof in. The siding is falling off, it had a raccoon problem, so there's a cage of two in the roof.” Brett acknowledged the special opportunity to help a veteran in need by saying, “It's one of those things where we're very excited to get him a new roof, especially right ahead of winter. Just so he can have peace of mind. Everyone needs a roof.” Although the roof was in bad shape, the crew was still able to completely replace it in just a few hours. Habitat for Humanity’s Jill Sovie added, “It just takes the burden off the family. They can enjoy their home and not have to worry about things such as a roof.”

As the saying goes, “what goes around comes around.” Derrick is a prime example of that, seeing as he continues to serve his community by aiding underprivileged and at-risk youth. In fact, he wasn’t even at his home while the construction crew was there because working with those children is his full-time job.

Do you know of someone in the industry who is ‘doing good deeds’ in their community? Help us catch them at it. Send news and information to info@rooferscoffeeshop.com.
