SRS Distribution veteran career in roofing

By Cass Jacoby.

SRS delivers support to veterans by investing in their futures via a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) scholarship.

SRS Distribution Inc. believes in supporting our veterans. They are committed to investing in veteran’s futures, and giving back to those who have selflessly served our country. That is why SRS offers a CDL Scholarship. You read that right, as a veteran you can get paid to train for CDL A, CDL B and Crane Certifications! Not only will SRS cover the cost of your training, but they will employ you as you train!

Benefits include:

  • Paid time off

  • Medical, dental and life insurance

  • 401K retirement plan

  • Safety bonuses

  • Ownership opportunity

These scholarships are available to veterans of the Armed Forces, members currently serving in any Reserve Component of the Armed Forces and members currently serving in the Army or Air National Guard.

How does the scholarship work?

CDL Scholarship recipients will participate in a 90-day training program. By the end of the month, these candidates will have been introduced to the roofing industry and will have experience working alongside warehouse staff, preparing and delivering building materials to SRS customers.

Within 60 days, candidates will attend CDL Academy, with all required travel, housing and meals paid for by SRS as an extension of the scholarship. By the end of the 90-day period, scholarship recipients will test for their Commercial Driver's License.

After these 90 days and successfully obtaining a CDL, candidates will be hired as a logistics specialist, becoming a full-time driver for SRS and receive a $1,000 bonus. Recipients in some regions will receive additional training opportunities and could get certified as crane and moffet operators.

In order to qualify for the scholarship, you must:

  • Be a current military service member or military veteran with honorable, under honorable conditions, or general under honorable discharge status and authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without sponsorship.

  • Have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record (no more than two moving violations of accidents within the last three years and no license suspensions within the last five years, including no DUI or DWI’s).

  • Be over 21 years of age, with a highschool degree or G.E.D and the ability to lift 80 to 100 pounds continuously.

Applicants must sign a Substance Abuse and Testing Policy applicable to CDL drivers as mandated by FMCSA and submit a pre-employment drug screen and meet acceptable criminal background check standards. Additionally, they must be able to pass a DOT medical physical. CDL scholarship recipients will be required to sign a 15-month service commitment and meet all the requirements to be eligible.

Military veterans will be asked to provide one of the following upon request:

  • Copy of DD214 (showing honorable, under honorable conditions, or general under honorable).

  • Leave and Earning Statement (LES) (For those serving in the reserve, guard or still on active duty).

  • Letter from the Veterans Administration confirming service and character of discharge.

A $1,000 bonus will be awarded once the recipient receives their Commercial Driver’s License from their local DMV.
