Whether you work in roofing, waterproofing or exterior wall fields, the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) has a space for you! The organization focuses on advancing the overall enclosure industry by providing educational opportunities, networking events and expert consultations. One of the spaces that these resources come together in is at the IIBEC International Convention and Trade Show! This last year, the show hosted exhibitors from over 127 manufacturers and providers with some incredible demonstrations from companies like Elevate Roofing Systems, Westlake Royal Roofing Solutions and Dörken Systems Inc. To conclude the entire show, IIBEC made sure to celebrate the building enclosure industry with their annual Awards Luncheon.
The event began with remarks from IIBEC President Amy Peevey followed by an invocation from IIBEC past president Bob Card and comments from IIBEC Executive Vice President and CEO Brian Pallasch, who introduced IIBEC’s first Excellence in Building Enclosure Consulting Awards in five categories. The winning consultants and projects in each category were:
Pallasch then recognized IIBEC credential holders, noting that last year a record number of individuals earned an IIBEC credential. “We look forward to having even more next year,” he said.
The Richard M. Horowitz Award for best technical article in IIBEC Interface during the previous calendar year went to “Remediating Leaks in Below-Grade Structures and Plazas,” by Paul Buccellato, F-IIBEC, RWC, REWC, FASTM, AIA. For the first time in IIBEC’s history, all of its 26 chapters achieved a ranking in IIBEC’s Outstanding Chapter Award program: Ruby, Gold, Silver and Bronze. In honor of IIBEC’s 40th anniversary, this year — and this year alone — the Platinum level has been changed to Ruby. IIBEC’s first-ever Sapphire Award — for achieving Platinum/Ruby Awards for five years in a row — went to the IIBEC North Texas Chapter.
IIBEC then recognized the longevity of several members who had achieved the status of 25-year, 30-year and 35-year membership. One member, Roger Staley, was recognized as a 40-year member of IIBEC.
Tom Gernetzke, chair of the IIBEC Jury of Fellows, recognized two new inductees: Amy Peevey, REWC, RRO, PE, CDT and Marc Caputo, RRC, LEED AP. In the photo to the left, you can see the moment Robért Hinojosa handed Amy Peevey her IIBEC Jury of Fellows induction plaque!
The Emerging Professionals Award of Excellence — given to a young professional who has shown exceptional leadership, professionalism and/or industry contribution at an early stage in their career in the profession of building enclosure consulting — went to Justin Bell, RBEC, REWO, RRO, CDT.
The Michael DeFrancesco Outstanding Volunteer Award went to Stephen Baxter, RRC, RRO.
The William C. Correll Award, presented to an IIBEC staff member who has demonstrated a high degree of professionalism, leadership, ethics and unselfish dedication or who has made a significant contribution to the growth and recognition of IIBEC, went to Betty Quan.
The President’s Award, awarded at the pleasure of the sitting president to those who have made a significant contribution to IIBEC within the past year, went to Burt Carver, RRC, RRO.
The Joe F. Hale Lifetime Achievement Award — presented to those individuals who have provided a lifetime of extraordinary service and contribution to the success of the association — went to Johann “John” Willers, F-IIBEC, RRC, PE.
The afternoon included two blocks of educational sessions, a general session on the present and future outlook of the building enclosure profession and industry and the emerging professionals networking reception.
The 2024 IIBEC International Convention and Trade Show will conclude on Monday, March 11, with more education sessions, the Annual Meeting of the Members, the Foundations’ Live Auction and Reception and the President’s Annual Banquet.
