All Hands On Deck

Calling all roofing professionals! Put your hands to work during this waterproof training with Sika. 

Are you someone who learns by doing? Do you work in the office, but want to know more about the day-to-day rooftop operations? You’re in luck!  Join other professionals – from the rooftop to the boardroom – at Chinook Building Envelope Services for a hands-on waterproofing training with Sika on May 17, 2022 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. 

During this training, you’ll learn traffic coating fundamentals and detailing — traffic coatings are used under surfaces that experience pedestrian and vehicular traffic. While hands-on training is common with this local chapter of National Women in Roofing (NWIR) in Washington, they knew they wanted to do something different, which is when they came up with waterproofing. “Chinook Roofing just started doing waterproofing two years ago. And March was our formal name change to Chinook Building Envelope Services,” shared Rae July, an RCS Influencer and the director of steep-slope operations for Chinook Building Envelope Services.   

Having done various trainings on steep- and low-slope roofing, they decided it was time to expand their offerings to waterproofing. “We try to show all the different facets of the roofing industry; there's more than just putting on shingles and rolling out membrane,” shared Rae. 

What can you expect from this training? The local Sika rep is going to share about the products available through Sika and then go straight into the hands-on portion! You’ll get to see the different stages of the waterproofing process through visual mock-ups and will have the chance to do some waterproofing yourself. 

“With one of the pillars of NWIR being education, we strive to give our members the opportunity to learn about the different aspects of roofing,” shared Rae. “There are many people who work in the office who aren’t physically out on the roof all the time. This is our way of giving them a glimpse of what people in the field do every day." 

Not only does a training like this give people a chance to get their hands dirty and learn something new, but it also allows people to understand other aspects of the roofing process they aren’t involved in day to day. “If you understand what everyone else is doing it helps you do your job a little better,” Rae said. “When you have to do it yourself, you get a different perspective and appreciate the hard work those on the rooftops are doing.” 

Since the pandemic, less than a handful of in-person trainings have taken place. Rae is looking forward to the event, saying, “We miss having people and interfacing in person!” 

This training is open to everyone — RSVP or just show up. Come rain or shine, the training will go on! Ideally the event will take place outside, but the warehouse is available if the PNW weather arrives in full force. Regardless of precipitation, refreshments and BBQ will be provided after. Get ready to get hands-on, network and have fun!
