At the 2025 IIBEC Convention and Trade Show, the RoofersCoffeeShop® sound stage brought together two industry veterans to discuss a small but mighty innovation that’s quietly transforming how contractors and consultants handle vent pipe extensions on re-roofing projects. Rob Baynard of SSR (Smith Seckman Reid) and Kevin Morris of TUBOS Vent Pipe Extensions sat down with Karen Edwards to share how TUBOS, a product born from a contractor's frustration, is solving old — and expensive — roofing problems.
While many products come and go in the roofing world, TUBOS vent pipe extensions have proven to be a durable, time-saving solution that have stood the test of time. Kevin, who developed TUBOS 16 years ago, explained how the product came to life during the economic downturn when contractors needed cost-effective and labor-saving solutions. He shared, “It was a long road starting in a recession, saving contractors time on a job when that’s pretty much all they had.”
Originally designed to raise vent pipes on re-roof projects where insulation adds height to the system, TUBOS has evolved into a critical tool for addressing leaks and failing couplings. Rob, who works on the consulting side of the roofing industry, noted how TUBOS has helped him solve persistent issues with vent pipe leaks. “As an owner’s rep, I use TUBOS a lot for solving old problems,” Rob shared. “I found a lot of cases where vents were leaking and when we cut into them for an exploratory investigation. We found that the no-hub couplings were failing so we cut them out and replaced them with the TUBOS vent pipe extensions and solved a lot of problems by utilizing them.”
What’s remarkable is that TUBOS wasn’t initially intended to address these failures. TUBOS were invented to replace the no-hub coupling way of extending pipes. Kevin admitted that while TUBOS was created for raising pipes to code height, contractors have since adopted them for repair work, thanks to their ease of installation and superior design. Kevin explained, “They're almost impossible to install wrong, the red insert acts as a downspout to direct the water down into the existing pipe and not the roof system.”
After 16 years in the field with no reported leaks or warranty issues, TUBOS continues to prove its value as a long-term solution for contractors and consultants alike. Its versatility in both new installations and critical repairs makes it a trusted tool in the roofing industry. As the roofing market evolves and challenges persist, solutions like TUBOS demonstrate how simple innovations can have a lasting impact on building performance and contractor efficiency.
