A quick spec guide for a long-lasting roof system

General Coatings Quick Spec Guide

By Evelyn Witterholt.

If you are installing a spray foam roof system, General Coatings offers an easy-to-read guide on its benefits and tips for the installation process.

There are many great reasons to offer spray foam roofing systems to your customers. Spray foam helps stop leaks, insulate roofs and they provide a sustainable roof system. A spray foam roof can be used on existing roof systems, including mod bit, metal and concrete! For contractors installing General Coatings’ Ultra-Thane spray foam roofing systems, they have a handy Quick Spec Foam Roof System guide for installation basics, storage tips and the many benefits of this type of system.

The guide breaks down the four main components of this system: primer, spray polyurethane foam (SPF), base coat and top coat. Each step helps create a high-performing roof that is more energy efficient, lightweight and weather-resistant. It even offers enhanced resistance to hail damage and wind uplift. This roof system also complies with the California State Fire Marshall’s requirements.

This quick spec guide also goes into depth about how to properly prepare the current substrate for the spray foam roof system. It encourages contractors to perform an adhesion test with their primer to make sure the substrate will work with the coating. In regard to preparing the substrate, the guide suggests the surfaces “should be clean and dry, free of dirt, oil, solvent, grease, loose particles, peeling coating and other foreign matter.”

Pre-inspecting the roof for any necessary repairs is highly encouraged. They say your inspection should include looking at the HVAC flashing, roof penetrations, drains, edges and details and any wet insulation, to name a few. General Coatings’ guide also offers information about the right climate conditions to install their systems in and how to properly spray their system.
