A new frontier for Hispanic contractors

NAHICA A new frontier for Hispanic contractors
September 8, 2024 at 9:00 p.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Redefining what it means to be a leader in the construction industry.

The National Hispanic Contractors Association (NAHICA) is rapidly transforming the landscape of the Hispanic construction community. In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Sergio Terreros, president of NAHICA, shared insights on the organization's mission, growth and the popular Expo Contratista, a unique event that has quickly become a cornerstone for Hispanic contractors nationwide.

“We are a group of contractors and people that want to make a difference in the Hispanic construction industry,” said Sergio. Founded in 2018, NAHICA provides resources and programs specifically designed to help Latino contractors thrive in the competitive construction market. According to Sergio, many Hispanic workers excel at their craft but face challenges in scaling their businesses. “The programs teach and give the resources to the Latino contractor on how to run the business, how to bid projects, where to find those projects [and] how to get the money to run those projects,” he explained.

One of NAHICA’s standout initiatives is the Expo Contratista, an annual trade show that brings together multiple trades within the construction industry. “Now this expo Contratista bring all the trades and it's on purpose because we find out the Latino community, they're multi-craft,” Sergio said. “They don’t like to leave money on the table. If they have a roof to do and you need help installing windows or siding, they will never say no.”

Since its inception, the expo has seen tremendous success, drawing thousands of contractors each year. This year's event, held in Atlanta, Georgia, October 4-5, promises to be even more dynamic, featuring seminars, workshops and competitions like the Maestro Ninja, a construction twist on the popular Ninja Warrior contest. The expo is more than just an industry showcase; it’s a vital networking opportunity for Latino contractors to connect with suppliers, general contractors and each other.

Terreros expressed the importance of building the right connections: “It’s good to know people, but knowing the right people and the right people knowing you is where the money’s at.”
