There has been nearly a 200% increase in mass shootings across the United States over the past decade. During this period more than 160 active shooter events have occurred, an average of 16.7 events per year. These tragic occurrences have also increased globally. Taking maximum precaution to protect ourselves and colleagues during an active shooter event is now a part of our new reality. These events are not only possible at schools and the workplace, but also at any large group event. Our field teams are frequent visitors to schools, manufacturing plants, city buildings, etc. Shockingly, 45% of these shootings occur at places of business.
At Tremco/Weatherproofing Technologies, Inc., we value all our employees, vendors, and contractors and our safety efforts are aimed toward ensuring they all have the benefit of a work environment which is as safe as possible. The climate of the world in which we live forces us to also consider active shooter or potential active shooter events in the workplace as a part of our safety program and re-evaluate how we best protect our employees, should there be an occurrence. Unfortunately some of our very own our field teams have been in lock down or active shooter situations. Our commitment to safety is why we teamed up with the ALICE Training Institute to provide our global workforce a training program/protocol to be implemented during any violent situation, but in particular active shooter events. Training is vital in enabling one to react appropriately if confronted by an active shooter. As these situations evolve quickly, employee actions could mean the difference between life and death.
Our partnership with ALICE results in a 3-year training program that will address the topic head on and remind our team what steps to take in these types of dangerous scenarios. The ALICE training (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate) instructs when an active shooter is present, one will need to assess the scenario as it unfolds and simultaneously consider the information at hand to guide them to the safest course of action. Protecting themselves and possibly those around them must become priority #1.
No one wants to think that they will ever be involved in an active shooter event. However, Tremco/WTI believes that it’s our duty to empower our most valued assets, by helping them to be thoroughly informed on how to handle this type of unforeseen situation and realize that their actions may result in the preservation of life. How do I react? Where do I go? What’s my next step? These are all split-second decisions that they may face; and they will need to do so in a clear, concise manner. That’s the Tremco commitment to our workforce re-imagined, and overall it’s how we Lead with Safety.
