A Fresh Look at Stone Coated Steel Tiles

METALCON Stone Coated Steel Tiles
April 25, 2019 at 10:25 a.m.

By METALCON.

Dating back to the days of World War II when the British demanded a stronger roofing product to protect themselves against bombings, stone coated steel roofing tiles have played an important part of roofing history.

It wasn’t until a few years ago that the industry saw a surge in their popularity and usage.

According to a 2015 article in Houstopia.com, ” the silver lining of the ‘polar vortex’ of 2013-2014 was in persuading many homeowners it was time to forever abandon their conventional roofs for something better.” The article goes on to cite that “according to the St. Louis-based Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA), the residential metal roofing market has grown by double digits in the last five years. Residential roofing experts report metal roofing is winning converts based on its durability, fire-resistance, energy savings, value and natural good looks.” “Metal roofs last two to three times longer than ordinary roofs, meaning they can last 40 to 60 years or longer, according to the MRA.”

While more than 70 percent of all single-family homes in the US are still roofed with asphalt shingles, that number is slowly shrinking thanks to more energy-efficient and durable metal roofing. For an overall report on the best roofing materials, check out Roofingcalc.com’s “Best Roofing Materials for Homes 2019: Roofing Material Costs, Pros & Cons.”

They also recently published a more specific “Stone-Coated Steel Roof Cost, Plus Pros & Cons in 2019,” in which they break down the report by costs of materials and installation, versatile styles, durability, how it stands up to natural disasters, installation process, energy efficiency, and resale value. Advanced technology makes it possible to imitate the premium look of clay, slate or architectural shingle so closely, that it is nearly impossible to discern that the stone-coated tile is actually made of metal. One very important advantage of a stone-coated steel roof is that it will continue looking fresh and new for many years to come without requiring any additional maintenance.

As DesignandBuildwithMetal.com may have predicted a few years ago, could the “metal construction industry’s best kept secret be slowly getting out” about stone coated steel tiles?

DECRA Roofing Systems, one of the long-standing manufacturers of stone coated steel roofing tiles, will be on hand at METALCON 2019. Plan to visit them in Booth #937 on the show floor.METALCON 2019 will take place in Pittsburgh, PA, this year, October 16-18. Housing is OPEN so you can make your hotel reservation today or sign up to receive information on registration. We’ll see you in the “Steel City!”
