The morning began cool and sunny which is perfect for September. We have had some rainy tournaments in the past! Keeping with tradition, committee members met to assemble bags and set up the registration areas. Moving quickly, they managed to assemble 156 bags in less than an hour! Bill Bauer and Ross Riddle (with the perpetual trophy front in center) checked in everyone as they made their way through the assembly line where Past President Lang and Brandon Riddle were selling tickets for our scholarship fund. Eddie Garcia from Roofmaster treated each guest to a complimentary goody bag that included a Roofmaster polo, while Rudy Berumen from APOC ensured everyone viewed the flat screen TV’s and electronic prizes sponsored by the company.
Roofmaster was the Prime Sponsor this year, commemorating their very own Jim Nienow. Western Colloid hosted the continental breakfast with personalized coffee cups, fresh pastries and bagels from Cornerstone Bakery.
Meanwhile, the 12th Annual Don Banks Putting Contest was underway with Julio Gonzalez (Chapman Coast Roof) and Rick Marto (Tropical Roofing Products) hosting the event at the green, offering complimentary cigars and doing it the Don Banks way!
This year we had to close the tournament once again! We managed to quickly make it to a 10:45 a.m. shotgun start and asked all participants to grab their box lunch and load up in their carts to start the tournament on time. Even with a full course we always strive to keep the tournament at a good pace. This keeps our loyal participants happy!
Tee box sponsorships sold out this year! We welcome as many vendors as we can accommodate. O’Hagin Manufacturing was back with games, balls, cold drinks and a 1k Hole in One sponsorship. Other sponsors included Tom T Sales Group, Tropical Roofing Products, Malarkey Roofing Products, Eagleview, ERM Insurance Brokers, Western States (Scott Fury) Carlisle Syntec, Roofline, Lomanco Vents, General Coatings, Sentry Building, Gibraltar, Makita Tools and American Standard Coatings. Each vendor had games, giveaways, drinks and food for our participants!
The afternoon shaped up to be in the 70’s with a cool breeze. Even with all the vendor display stops, participants managed to stay on track and filed into the banquet room at around 4:30 p.m. for the hot BBQ buffet awaiting them. President Malekow strolled the room and thanked guests for their participation while Committee members Steve, Ross, Bill, and Brandon made sure to keep the excited crowd entertained by raffling items during dinner and throughout the entire event. Co-Chair Steve Lang oversees the raffle for our tournament, which is an important source of income for our scholarship fund. This year, prizes included an array of electronics, household items and even tools!
In addition, Oak Creek continues to offer us their generous contribution of player memberships and golf vacations.
Lastly, APOC has been the Grand Prize Sponsor for years, with donations including large electronics and apple products.
Tournament winners were announced and received unique crystal engraved awards hand selected by Committee member Bill Bauer. Robert Price and his team, Premier Roofing & Building, took 1st Place this year! Lang Roofing came in at 2nd Place. Board member Bill Jordan won the Putting Contest. A complete list of winners is available on our website or link it here.
Every year we invite multiple students to attend the dinner. Many of our students are studying outside the Orange County area. We were lucky to have Alyssa Blackmore reschedule her evening shift and join us to accept her award. Alongside Alyssa was her father Brent Bonnell of APOC as she was recognized for her achievements. Steve Lang also took this special moment to share with the group how important our scholarship program is and once again thanked participants for their support of our tournament.
Scholarships awarded this year totaled $38,500 to 19 students! Since 1993, we have recognized the achievements of 219 students. Over the last 12 years, we have awarded $273,500 to deserving students. Thank you to RCI Southern California Chapter and Greg Banks, San Marino Roof for their annual contribution to our fund. We appreciate your support!
Here is the full list of ALL sponsors!
Thank you to our sponsors for their support!
All sponsors were entered in a “Sponsors Drawing” for a table at our Annual Christmas Party on December 4, 2019 in Seal Beach. This year’s winner was Tom T Sales Group.
Once again, this tournament would not be possible without the dedication and passion of the committee members who spend countless hours volunteering their time to ensure it is a successful, sold out event. They accomplish their goal every year! We are thankful for Co-Chairs Ross Riddle, South Coast Shingle, and Steve Lang, Lang Roofing, and Members Bill Bauer, CertainTeed; Jeff Meinhart, Roofmaster; Rudy Berumen, APOC; Bruce Radenbaugh, Biltwell Roofing; Julio Gonzalez, Chapman Coast Roof and Rick Marto, Tropical Roofing Products.
Thank you to the companies who continue to support by attending the event. Your participation enables us to keep the scholarship program alive by supporting students in their educational endeavors. We hope to see you this year!
