RCS Influencer Greg Serevetas says the key to fall protection training is to keep it both engaging and practical.
When it comes to fall protection, I think the key is to keep training both engaging and practical. Here's what works best for us:
- Hands-on training: Instead of just talking about safety, we get up there and do it. Putting on harnesses, checking anchor points and actually practicing the techniques is way more effective than a PowerPoint — we still do PowerPoints as well.
- Real-life scenarios: We run through common situations that roofers face. This helps everyone see how fall protection plays out in the real world, not just in theory.
- Regular refreshers: Safety training isn’t a one-and-done thing. We make it a point to do refreshers regularly, keeping the team sharp and up to date with the latest practices.
- Open dialogue: We encourage everyone to speak up if something doesn’t look safe or if they’re unsure about something. No question is too small when it comes to safety. Everyone has the safety supervisor's number and part of protocol is to call and or facetime him in any of the situations they are unsure about.
- Lead by example: Finally, it’s important that the more experienced crew members walk the talk. When the team sees everyone, from the newest hire to the site lead, following safety protocols, it reinforces the importance of fall protection. Along with random safety inspections by our field supervisors.
Staying safe isn’t just about ticking a box — it’s about making sure everyone gets home at the end of the day. That's what matters most.
