The Alliance's 2017 Construction Management Student Competition continues to be a hallmark competition that promotes careers in roofing industry management. In addition to providing a significant learning opportunity, the competition fosters an environment that is meant to bring out the best in each team; encourage dialogue among the students; and foster team spirit as students rise to meet the challenge.
The teams had to bid on a roof system on the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Each team had to research the project, review the plans and specifications, and assemble a full estimate and proposal to submit a qualified bid package.
Each team had to work to find a competitive edge to beat the competition while still maintaining a reasonable margin. For this project, each team had to decide on the correct application methods, show overall roofing knowledge and illustrate its company is prepared to undertake the project.
Teams submitted their written proposals Dec. 12. The second part of the competition will be the oral presentation before a panel of judges (acting as the general contractors selecting the roofing contracting company to hire), which will take place during NRCA's 130th Annual Convention and the 2017 International Roofing Expo® in Las Vegas.
Teams submitted their proposals Dec. 12. After reviewing the written proposals, the competition judges agreed to invite all six teams to travel to Las Vegas to give their oral presentations. The teams will be presenting before a panel of judges who will be acting as the general contractors selecting the roofing contracting company to hire for the project. The presentations will take place Thursday, March 2, between 7:45 and 11:15 a.m. at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, North Hall, Islander I.
The presentation schedule is as follows:
The successful team solution will be based on the team’s understanding of the project; realistic construction schedule and man-loading financial proposal; written proposal; and presentation. The winning team will be announced March 2 during the NRCA Industry Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception starting at 5 p.m. at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, North Hall, South Pacific E and will receive a team trophy and a $5,000 L.B. Conway scholarship for their school; individual awards; recognition in press releases sent to local and national media and roofing industry trade press; and acknowledgement in Professional Roofing magazine and on the Alliance’s website.
During their visit to the International Roofing Expo, the teams will have the opportunity to have two site visits. One to the T-Mobile Arena and one to Dielco Crane Service.
This year’s competition doubled in size! We have a total of six teams participating. For more information visit http://www.nrca.net/alliance-student-competition-2017.
