20 Years Later, Legacy® Roofing Shingles are Built to Last

DEC - ProdSvc - Malarkey - 20 Years Later, Legacy Shingles Built to Last
December 9, 2017 at 7:30 a.m.

In 1997, Malarkey Roofing Products introduced the Legacy® architectural shingle line with industry-leading SBS polymer modified asphalt.

by Malarkey Roofing Products.

Over the past two decades, the shingle line’s technology continues to improve, while remaining a reliable roofing choice. Today, the Legacy® architectural shingle line is fortified with durable Flexor™ polymer modified asphalt that promotes superior granule adhesion and extreme weather protection, including Class 4 impact resistance. This product line also includes the optional Scotchgard™ Protector from 3M for added protection against black streaks caused by algae.

The Legacy® shingle provides superior Class 4 roofing shingle protection, which is the highest rating possible. During a Class 4 impact resistance test on asphalt shingles, a 2-inch diameter steel ball is dropped from 20 feet onto the shingle to simulate the impact of hail. Malarkey shingles with Flexor™ polymer modified asphalt tend to resist deformation and granule loss on the face of the shingle, as well as cracking on the underside.

Earlier this year, Legacy® shingles withstood impacts from a severe hail storm in Kansas City, Kansas. Following the storm, roofing contractor Shawn Bellis inspected many roofs but found no damage on those with Legacy® shingles. “I have been installing Malarkey Legacy® since 1997. It’s what I suggest to my customers and it is what I have on my own home,” he added.

In addition to hail, Legacy® shingles are also built to withstand heavy winds and wind-driven rain. (This is one of the reasons the shingle was selected for a recent hotel roofing project on the Oregon coast.) Malarkey uses a specially formulated SEBS polymer modified asphalt sealant to help hold the shingle in place during high winds.

Laminated architectural shingles are manufactured with an enhanced profile to produce a three-dimensional appearance on the rooftop. They are typically made of two shingle layers laminated together with an adhesive. On the laminated architectural shingle, the top layer is cut into a saw tooth pattern and laminated to an uncut second layer, known as the "backer" or "shim."

Malarkey applies five lines of adhesive between the two shingle layers for additional strength. The shingles also feature two lines of SEBS polymer modified asphalt rain sealant in the critical lamination area of the shingle for double protection against wind driven rain. SEBS asphalt rain sealant is engineered with adhesive properties to join the shingle together and cohesive properties to prevent it from separating.

To further enhance the look and durability of the architectural shingle, Malarkey also offers the Legacy® XL. This heavyweight shingle offers a distinguished design on the roof, while maintaining the fortified durability of the original Legacy® shingle design. The Legacy® XL shingles are 20 percent thicker than Legacy® shingles, with a 17 percent increase in overall mass. This extra thickness creates a more pronounced, high profile design to elevate the look of the roof.
