Millennial Employees are the Future of the Industry

RCS Influencer Greg Hayne says that in order to retain millennial employees, companies need to start changing.

As a trainer and consultant to roofing companies, I have the opportunity to work with many roofing contractors. A recurring theme surrounding hiring new employees is understanding the millennial generation and how to ensure that their work environment is one that will keep them loyal and happy.

A recent article by Michael Maccoby and Tim Scudder discusses the topic of millennials and refers to them as ‘interactives.’ They see themselves as free agents who want to work for employers who will train them for their next job in another company or offer a stepping stone to the next part of their career. While it’s easy to jump to negative conclusions about the millennial generation, it’s important to keep in mind that these youth are the future of our industry.

It’s very important for the millennial generation to feel that they are working for a company that cares about its employees and their well-being and they also want to work for companies that practice corporate social responsibility.

Many of you have millennials working in your own companies and you may have been wondering what you can do to be sure they stay.  The first step is to change how you run your company to be ready for the future. Don’t fight it. Figure out how to use millenials’ qualities to your advantage. Take the first step by getting to know your employees of the millennial generation and work together to provide an environment where they can feel like they are making a difference.

Greg Hayne is the owner of Hayne Coaching Group. See Greg’s full bio here.
