This course will delve into the need for change, describe the many benefits of the “beyond code” approach, and demonstrate the ways to get there. The FORTIFIED building standard will be explained along with existing construction materials and methods that can help architects and builders develop structures that not only exceed code requirements but are disaster resilient with longer service lives.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Explain why there is a need today for exceeding minimum code requirements when designing and building homes and other structures.
2. Define key industry terms related to methods and principles of beyond code construction.
3. Discuss the benefits of beyond code construction with clients, building material manufacturers, contractors and consultants.
4. Describe the FORTIFIED building standard and compare it to other well-known, beyond code standards such as Passive House and the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED®.
5. Explain the value of beyond code standards that focus on resiliency to homeowners through an increase in quality and insurability.
6. Identify types of building materials and methods that perform beyond code and contribute to a structure’s resiliency.
