Sherwin-Williams Roofing Solutions has something for everyone

Geocel IIBEC 2024

By Emma Peterson.

Learn a bit about the background of each of the Sherwin-Williams' Roofing Solutions brands to know what coating is best for you.

This last March, the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) hosted their International Convention and Trade Show in Phoenix, Arizona. The convention, which spanned four days and was themed as “Soar in 24”, hosted a series of networking events, continuing education opportunities, speakers and an incredible trade show. The Coffee Shops crew was thrilled to have the opportunity to explore the conference and talk to everyone on the trade show floor!

While on the floor, Heidi J. Ellsworth got the chance to catch up with Kathy Scoch to talk about everything Sherwin-Williams, Geocel, Kool Seal and Uniflex. Kathy is a national accounts sales manager and has worked with the company for 35 years now. In her position she has seen the coatings department of Sherwin-Williams grow over time, with the acquisition of all three brands. She summarized, “Geocel is our caulks and sealants, Kool Seal is our more handyman type brand. Uniflex is our contractor, professional grade roof coatings called acrylics and silicone technologies.” Learn a bit more about the history of each brand and how they found their place in the Sherwin-Williams family.

Geocel

Geocel was founded in 1974 and is known for creating innovative sealants for applications in commercial, industrial and residential construction, along with non-automotive transportation. They are built on a foundation of quality, being the first U.S. sealant manufacturer to receive the International Organization for Standardization’s 9001 registration. They were acquired by Sherwin-Williams, and this has enabled them to push innovation even further, developing products like their Phantom color line. Kathy elaborated, “The Phantom is transparent and comes in six different shades. When you put it on your metal panel, it's going to match that color perfectly.”

Kool Seal

Founded in 1906, this brand was the first to introduce an aluminum reflective coating. These products are specifically designed to be protective and energy efficient. Part of Kool Seal’s dedication to this can be seen in their partnership with Energy Star, which is a partner program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help consumers find more cost-saving and energy-efficient solutions and products. Kathy explained that after the acquisition by Sherwin-Williams in 2005, she has been “loving the growth that Kool Seal is seeing together with Sherwin-Williams.”

Uniflex

This brand’s history began in 1946 when they engineered the first fluid applied roof coating in the industry. They have a history of meeting high standards. Similar to Geocel, it was one of the first businesses to receive the International Organization for Standardization’s 9001 registration. As they move into the future of roof coatings, they are placing a specific focus on the environmental aspect of these materials, as Kathy explained, “The level of engagement with the consultants and coatings is elevated and the value that we can provide to our clients on sustainability is really important.”

Watch the full interview to learn more about each brand and the unique coatings offerings they manufacture!
