I started a slate job today. For some reason the picture I took of the completed work of the day didn't save to my camera so I'll post that latter. I did about 2 square yesterday by myself. 12X24 PA slate. The slate on the old part are Spanish black and these are not available because the quarry they came from is closed. Thats probably a good thing as the slate have a ore deposit that rust through. I'll take a pic of one to show you today.
Big Nor-Easter is coming latter today and we are expected to get over a foot of snow so I'll have to button it up today and remove all the planks off the roof.

I like to install another nut and bolt on each circle. It doesn't take much time to drill out one of the holes and it adds alot of strength to the system.
Nice looking job copperman, unfortunatly the snow tomorrow is going to set thing back further.

Yes they are talking 18 to 24 inches on top of the 12 inches we already got. I did not go there this week yet. I will wait till the snow stops falling and them go clean it off.

copperman Said: These brackets cost $4.50 for the shank and $5.00 for the circle.
Wow things are way cheaper over there, thats still half the price of a standard copper/brass half round bracket here.

Have not been to the job all last week. between snow storms and illness I lost the week. Will do a copper roof on that porch roof Monday. I hope to beat the next storm coming in Monday afternoon. I should be able to do that it's only a square. 9 panels 9'6" ft.long. I also have a small rubber roof on a balcony to get done 5X8 with two post. Only show a deck on the prints but builder wants a roof on it with a teak deck over it. I made up 100 more snow guards for the rest of the slate roof. Had my son help me. He likes working with the machines and soldering iron. Going to spend the rest of the week in Ohio with grand kids. I promised to make them a snowman/Thomas the train. Grandson said I can't do it because they don't have blue snow. So I guess I'll have to pull a few tricks out of the bag.
you can see the two ares I'm going to do in this shot.

Looks good. Surprised you didn't do a second group of SG's farther up the roof though.

I had to match the old portion. They only had two rows at the bottom. Very fussy homeowner, it can take weeks to make a change so the builder said don't even mention it.

There are so many Extra's on this job now. They were only going to build the new addition and not touch the old portion. They now have gutted it to the bone. All new mechanics. That chimney in the middle is going to be torn down to the first floor and relayed in stone again so the walk-in fireplace and bread oven can be used. All this is T&M so the GC said don't even ask about more upgrades. The budget is tight and they haven't even started putting it back together with all the built-ins and finishes.

That makes sense. the budget it tight and they gut the rest of the building. Ready, FIRE, aim; I believe!

Yeah they have money for what they really want. They paid 14 mil. for the property so I think money would not be an issue. He lives in the converted barn now till the house is done. Has another GC doing barns and pool houses and other out buildings. I can't imagine what it cost this guy a day and it's been on going for almost two years. He dropped a million on a pond and it's beautiful. I get a few shot of it. It's ice covered now so you can't really see how nice it is.

Starting copper roof
This is a picture of those Spanish slate with the ore deposit in it. Not a very good slate.
Started and finished the copper roof today. Getting ready to push it up.
After it was pushed up into place. No cuts and no place for it to leak. All double folded.
If you notice the foot prints its from pine rosin. I use it on steep roofs so I don't slip. Works great and washes off in the rain.

Copper, how do you hold it on the roof if you can push it into place? How is it fastened or how are the clips hooked?
copperman: [ RE: first day on job ] , Monday, March 08, 2010 @ 8:03 PM

That's my secrete But rest assured it has cleats.
the roof is held in place with clamps until the top 18 inches is folded over. Then take off all the clamps and push. Not always an easy thing to do. This is an 8 pitch so I grabbed the carpenters to help me push it up. There a few more details but that's all I'll give for now

---Copper sure looks bright and pretty. What is the cost per sq of the copper sheeting? I am going to the recycler soon and I get a great price for copper scrap. 2 weeks ago I cleaned out the shop of hand nails we are tired of storing. I got paid $1,100 for them at the scrap yard.

I pay about $5.40 square ft/1 lbs. for new. I buy it in 1000lbs. rolls. The scrap yard pays as of the other day $2.90 a pound for old and $3.10 for brite and shinny. I would of thought you could of sold those nails on craigs list for 2 or 3 times what the scrap yard gave you.
