Prevent Struck-by Incidents

NRCA Struck by Stand Down
March 28, 2023 at 6:00 p.m.

By Cayden Wemple.

The 4th annual National Stand-down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents effort is an event used to educate contractors about struck-by incidents.

From April 17-21, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) National Occupational Research Agenda Construction Sector Council will lead a collaborative effort called The National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents. The aim of the event is to increase awareness about struck-by hazards and how to avoid them.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the four most prevalent struck-by hazards include being hit by a falling, flying, swinging or rolling object. Struck-by incidents are also the second leading cause of death among construction workers, and they are the leading cause of nonfatal injuries in the construction industry.

This is a voluntary event for employers to discuss safety with their employees, however, it should be noted that any company can take the time to lecture on struck-by hazards. You can learn more by taking a look at the “What is the Struck-by Stand-Down” flyer and this NIOSH pamphlet “Join the National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents”

The five-day event will start April 17 at 1 p.m. CT, with a kickoff webinar from The Center for Construction Research and Training and the NORA Construction Sector Council. CPWR, NIOSH and the NORA Construction Sector Council also offer online resources to support the initiative, including infographics, toolbox talks, research and webinar recordings.

Struck-by incidents are a major cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries in this industry. Although the event is voluntary, it is a valuable opportunity for employers to discuss safety with their employees. You won’t want to miss out on this educational event.
