ServiceCon 2025 launched with a strong opening act as Cody Klein, founder of CommercialRoofers.com, energized the crowd with insights on scaling service departments and rethinking traditional growth strategies.
Fresh off a morning presentation packed with insightful interactions, Cody sat down with Heidi J. Ellsworth to share more about his journey from being a U.S. Air Force veteran to becoming a roofing entrepreneur. Cody’s career has seen rapid success, including building and selling JAG Roofing & Sheet Metal and later founding a consulting agency that now supports over 200 clients nationwide.
"We had a lot of interaction and got some really good feedback," Cody said, describing the packed session where attendees eagerly snapped photos of slides and filled notebooks with notes. His story, which includes trekking Mount Everest for 16 days during a career hiatus, resonated with many for its blend of ambition and reflection.
At the heart of Cody’s talk was a message about service. He shared the story of his shift in focus from the small percentage of roofs replaced each year to the vast majority needing maintenance, calling it a "Blue Ocean strategy." "Rather than chasing the same 4% every other roofer is, let's chase the 96% that nobody else is going after," he said.
He highlighted the benefits of service agreements for contractors, noting, "You're not having to start from zero every January," and emphasized the long-term value of building ongoing relationships with customers rather than relying solely on one-time projects. Citing success stories from his clients, Cody outlined how structured service programs can create a "compounding" growth effect over time.
Beyond numbers, Cody stressed the deeper payoff: "It's not just about making more money; it's about taking care of your customers," he said, noting the foundation of trust that leads to lasting success.
