- Set goals that aren't Mount Everest goals. Going to the top is optional, getting back down to the bottom is mandatory. Almost anybody can work hard and get to the top, but you can't live on the top. At some point you need to retreat back down to the valley where the oxygen is rich. Find a place in your business that you can sustain. You often want to set goals that are sustainable. Business is a marathon, not a sprint. If you sprint too early, you will be assured to lose the race.
- Always treat your customer with respect and give them the highest form of customer service.
- Always play the long game. Be willing to sacrifice in the short-term so that you can win big in the long term. You may have to change your way of thinking. Customer service is the barometer of a business. If the customer is satisfied it is a reflection of a satisfied employee or team of employees and that in turn is a reflection of a company that cares about their employees and customers.
- Be financially conservative in your business practices. Never take so much money from your company that you put it at risk. Cash is the blood in the veins of the company. If you take too much, you put everything at risk.
- The best marketing strategy that you have is to do the best job possible on the job you are currently working on. If you concentrate on customer service, your customers will do your marketing for you.
- Build a culture around integrity. Integrity is doing the right thing when it's hard to do and comes at a cost. If you use integrity in your decision making matrix, you will look far beyond the end of the runway. Integrity is playing the long game for the long-term gain and not worrying about the short-term sacrifices that it will inevitably take to get there.
